A year of building, and a gap to close
This year, inside a secure detention center in Hamilton County, young adults took turns running a job site, leading their crew on a 12x12 shed they designed themselves. A year ago, that program didn't exist.
That is what 2026 has looked like at Deeply Ingrained. We moved into a new shop on Indianapolis' east side. We launched Guided by the Grain: Foundations inside juvenile detention. Woodshop on Wheels reached about 1,400 kids, free to every family. And 8 of our youth earned OSHA 10 certification on their way toward the trades.
Like many nonprofits, we felt the effects of this year's federal and state funding changes, which shifted how and where philanthropy flows. Some after-school contracts that help support our summer programs ended, and a grant that covered youth wages wasn't renewed. Our partners and funders are doing their best with less, and the need for this work keeps growing.
- Keep Guided by the Grain youth on payroll, earning real wages while they learn
- Grow Foundations to an additional site in early 2027
- Deliver OSHA 10 certification in-house to every GBTG and Foundations participant in 2027
- Keep Woodshop on Wheels free for every child who walks up to one of our trailers
It's not about the wood, it's about building character.
